Spring and The Big Bang
Winter always seems so long, so cold and so icy. However, nature sends you a messenger with the promise of spring snow bells. When I see those delicate blossoms in the snow, I know the Big Bang theory is true. Nature explodes all around us! The growing season roars into life.
Although the ground is still covered with snow, there are other signs of spring. The squirrels visit the sugar maples to lick the sap during the warm hours of the day. You can see them hanging upside down on a branch licking sap.Plants and birds are ready for spring and you see the Big Bang in action. It is a miracle!
Eventually when the snow is gone, we have to prepare for the season. One of the first things I do every spring is picking up all the little and not so little branches that came down during the winter storms and that were buried under the snow. At the same time, I am checking whether we have a new “crop of stones”. Sometimes I feel they have been growing under the snow, but they actually were pushed up due to the freezing. We know that stones are bad for the mower blades; we have to pick them up!

Here is the long list of things we have to do early in spring: The winter equipment, like the snow blower, the snow shovels, the roof rake and sleds, has to be checked and often repaired before storing. The plow on the truck has to be taken off and stored. In April, the cars get their summer tires, and the studded snow tires will be put away until November. We drag the hoses out of the basement and connect them to the faucets.
Every year there is the big question: Do we keep our lawns the way they are, or do we expand. I think it all depends on the equipment you have. During our thirty years we have grown from a simple push mower (equals small lawn), to a self-propelled mower ( bigger lawn) to a garden tractor (good size lawn). Last year we upgraded to a baby tractor and I wonder how much bigger our lawns will be in the future!
For lawn treatment and our vegetable garden, we will have separate chapters to come..
